Quarterly sales and profit rise sharply at Motorola; company remaking itself in Internet image

Article Abstract:

Motorola Inc. reported double profits and revenue of $8.8 billion - $1.5 billion more than the same quarter last year - due to high demand for its semiconductors and cellular telephones. Motorola has been focusing on providing products and equipment for the Internet and Internet users and been linking with Web-based and networking companies in an effort to meet rising demand for wireless products. The company is considered by some market analysts as strong buy, a change from last year's when it was losing market share to makers of less expensive cell phones and writing off millions due to Iridium L.L.C.'s failure to live up to expectations in the satellite communications sector.
