Entertainment clout builds

Article Abstract:

Clear Channel Communications Inc of San Antonio, TX, will acquire SFX Entertainment of New York, NY, for $2.7 billion in stocks. The deal, which is still subject to antitrust review prior to closing in fall 2000, will create a giant company with interests in radio stations, television stations, billboards and live entertainment promotions. Clear Channel CEO Lowry Mays see SFX as an exceptional platform for pursuing the company's interests in music and the Internet.

EchoStar wins fight for DirecTV

General Motors has accepted $30 billion in cash and EchoStar stock to merge the two remaining satellite broadcasters. GM's Hughes Electronics subsidiary includes DirecTV.

Real work begins once AT&T deal is done

Article Abstract:

AT&T Corp. faces many challenges ahead after the completion of the its $32-billion acquisition of Tele-Communications Inc. The company will face a number of engineering problems that needs to be overcome such as the Internet's unstable manner of transmitting digital data. Other challenges include the problem of determining the number of calls their network can handle at once and the process of how to route the traffic. AT&T and TCI will also face issue of supplying sufficient power to ensure that phone rings and that back-up generators are present in the event of power outage.
