Regulators probe Continental side air bags

Article Abstract:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a probe to investigate as many as 50,000 of Ford Motor Co's Lincoln Continental sedans after receiving reports that the vehicles' side air bags can be unintentionally deployed. As of Nov 24, 2000, NHTSA has received three complaints, two of the incidents resulting in minor injuries. Meanwhile, the agency is upgrading an investigation into 277,656 1998 Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique cars because of reports that gas can spit out of the tank during refueling.

GM to repair air bags in Buicks, Oldsmobiles

Article Abstract:

General Motors Corp has announced that the driver-side air bags on some 290,000 Buick and Oldsmobile sedans could open unexpectedly. GM will begin to recall the air bags only later this year because it lacks the parts needed to make the repairs. For the meantime, GM advised drivers not to lean too close to the airbag and to always wear their seat belts. The airbag malfunction affects 103,000 Buick 1995 Regals and 187,000 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supremes sold in 1995-96 in the US and Canada.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee said Firestone replacement tires have higher rates of failure than the Firestone Wilderness tires that they are supposed to replace. Committee Chmn Billy Tauzin did not identify the tire brand with a higher rate of failure than Firestone's until after asking Ford why it did so.
