Critics assail U.S. plan to beef up customs

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Customs Service has announced that it will increase efforts at the U.S./Canadian border, including plans for additional funding for bomb detection equipment. The border security plan, which includes an increase of almost 600 more Customs Service agents, has been criticized by the Canadian Trucking Alliance.

Relations with Bush regime hit a knot; Americans threaten 20% duty on lumber

Article Abstract:

A softwood lumber agreement between the US and Canada will expire on Mar 31, 2001, and the George W. Bush administration plans to increase the duty on softwood lumber to 20% or more. Canada exports softwood lumber worth $10 billion per year to the US and this new duty would cost producers as much as $2 billion.
