Rest in peace, John Howard

Article Abstract:

John Howard, Australia's Prime Minister, has vacationed in Hawks Nest, New South Wales, every year since 1980. This remote location offers Howard a chance to rest undisturbed by media attention, and to closely contact a typical section of the people he serves. Howard will need to be relaxed to confront the controversies of 1998, which include the republican movement, debate over indigenous people's land titles, and the budget surplus.

Howard gets desperate

Article Abstract:

Australian Prime Minister John Howard generally does not give spontaneous speeches, but his having done so in the closing weeks of his reelection campaign suggests he is feeling increasing tension. Yet this speech will not convince Australians to support his party if they are struggling economically. Most citizens do not favor the goods and services tax that is Howard's most important policy.

Kernot demolishes a political convention

Article Abstract:

The emergence of Cheryl Kernot as a keynote speaker and shadow minister was one of the significant events at the 1998 Australian Labor Party conference. Another was Peter Beattie's endorsement of the Labor Party position on Wik. A third important event in Australian politics was Prime Minister John Howard's cautious move toward supporting a republican model.
