Right to sue HMOs restricted

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court has ruled that health maintenance organizations (HMOs) cannot be held liable for offering bonuses to doctors in an effort to reduce treatment costs. The ruling, handed down on Jun 12, 2000, is the first time that the High Court ruled on a system that provides health coverage to over 160 million Americans. HMOs, which are credited for providing greater access to health care for the underpriveleged, have been the subject of numerous complaints regarding their cost-cutting measures.

HMO ruling passes debate back to Congress

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court's decision on Jun 12, 2000, to disallow patients from using an employee benefits law to sue health maintenance organizations (HMOs) who give incentives to doctors for reducing medical costs is seen as the High Court's way of saying that these matters are better decided in the US Congress. The decision can be interpreted as a demonstration of the need for more laws to protect patients or a recognition by the Supreme Court of the importance of HMOs.

High court may act today on Microsoft

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court may decide as early as Sep 8, 2000 whether it will take up Microsoft's antitrust case or have it reviewed first by a federal appeals court. The justices have been swamped with filings from the Dept of Justice, which they claim is clear-cut. However, Microsoft claim the case is too complicated for an expedited review but Solicitor General Seth Waxman says the case should be resolved as soon as possible since its impact on the US economy is immense.
