Rivals Mine Kerry Senate Years For Material to Slow Him Down

Article Abstract:

John Kerry's new front-runner position among Democratic presidential candidates is creating new challenges to his Senate record. His opponents are re-examining his 19-year record as the Massachusetts junior senator. They are hoping that some of his votes will undermine his positions on military, social, and economic policies. One vulnerable action may be his support in 1997 for legislation to require elderly individuals with higher incomes to pay more for their Medicare premiums. As the 2004 presidential election approaches, Kerry is facing increased exposure on past decisions to cut back funding for the CIA and end tenure for public school teachers.

With Cry of 'Bring It On,' Kerry Shifted Tack to Regain Footing

Article Abstract:

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry created a most dynamic change in his political campaign that took him from lagging far behind in Iowa to an astonishing victory in the state's caucuses. He decided first to challenge Pres. Bush's national security agenda and then began to emphasize his own political strength in foreign policy. At the same time he completely reorganized his campaign staff by dismissing manager Jim Jordan and hiring former Sen. Edward Kennedy's chief of staff Mary Beth Cahill as his replacement. Most importantly, he began to demonstrate emotional empathy that Iowa voters appreciated.
