American President, George Bush's convincing manner of defeating John Kerry in 2004 elections could well knock Hillary Clinton out of the 2008 race. President Bush, elected with a majority of the popular vote, in command of both houses of Congress, with a united party behind him, and facing a confused and demoralized political opposition, has convinced his supporters into believing that the base he has created would form the platform for the next Republican Party presidential candidate.

The Australian prime minister, John Howard's latest Medicare reforms include $1.5 bn Medicare Plus package and $917 m of extra spending on Medicare. The political implications of such neutralizing of the Medicare-Plus issue on the election victory of John Howard and on the opposition are analyzed.
