Rover Unfurls, Opening New Stage in Exploring Mars

Article Abstract:

NASA reached its goal of getting a Mars space probe to the planet with the successful landing Saturday night of Spirit, the planetary rover. Signs of accomplishment came with the transmission of black-and-white photographs of the planet's surface in the Gusev crater which is near the equator on Mars. This was a much anticipated development following the catastrophic landing of the Polar Lander in 1999. The rover's exploration for indications of past life will begin in nine days after NASA has conducted probe tests and decided which direction Spirit should follow.
