Royal Bank may face airline conflict

Article Abstract:

Royal Bank of Canada Co's trust division Royal Trust Co has signed the requisition application filed by Onex Corp in the Ontario Superior Court to force Air Canada to move a shareholder's meeting to vote on its hostile takeover from Jan 7, 2000, to Nov 8, 1999. Royal Trust said it signed the application in behalf of its two accounts it hold, the Royal Balanced Fund and the Royal Canadian Equity Fund, which collectively owns 2.5 million Air Canada shares. Royal Bank is the long-standing lead lender to financially troubled Canadian Airlines.

Onex wins key battle in airline war

Article Abstract:

Onex Corp, together with a couple of mutual funds run by the Royal Bank of Canada, effected a valid requisition earlier in Sep 1999 to call a meeting of the investors of Air Canada, according to the ruling of Justice Robert Blair of the Ontario Superior Court. Shortly following Blair's decision, Onex scheduled a meeting on Nov 8, 1999, in Montreal, Canada, to allow Air Canada stockholders to vote on the former's hostile offer to combine Air Canada with Canadian Airlines.

'Mediocre' report card says Canada not making the grade

Article Abstract:

Canada's poor performance in the global productivity race has prompted the Conference Board of Canada to lower its international economic ranking. As a result of this, Canada's economic standing was brought down to the sixth place in the year 2004 from third place in the year 2003.
