Running out of cash: East Coast fisherman give Ottawa an earful

The program known as TAGS (The Atlantic Groundfish Strategy) provides income assistance to fisherman put out of work by the five-year ban on cod fishing. TAGS is due to run out of money by May 1998, and many fisherman in Atlantic Canada are lobbying to have it extended or get the ban lifted.

Twelve members of the government of former Saskatchewan premier Grant Devine have been charged with involvement in a scheme to defraud taxpayers of more than $887,000. Six members of the Progressive Conservative Party have been convicted and 3 others acquitted as the Tory scandal unfolds.
