Running rings around the games

Article Abstract:

The Sydney 2000 Olympics is being threatened by politics. NSW Premier Bob Carr has decided to leave the Olympic Games announcements to minister Michael Knight. Despite these developments, many were happy that Greg Norman has decided to join the Olympics team, but Carr who is facing an election in 1999 was unhappy. The news that Norman did not invite Carr from a cocktail party had also upset Carr.

Issues concerning the role of economists in describing and predicting economic conditions are discussed. The ways in which US and Japanese authorities attempt to boost consumer confidence in their economies are explored.
