Russia's war hits home: bombings rock the urban heartland, and the trail seems to lead to Islamic insurgents in the remote Caucasus region. Suddenly, nobody feels safe

Article Abstract:

This article describes the effect of four terrorist bombings in Russia, two in Moscow and one each in the cities of Volgodonsk and Buinaksk. Relevant details include the suspected involvement of Islamic insurgents, the political impact on President Boris Yeltsin, and likely Russian military response in Dagestan and Chechnya, two Islamic areas in the Caucasus region where the bombers are believed to have originated.

This article discusses opium production in Afghanistan, and the relation of the opium trade and the Afghan government, run by the Islamic militia Taliban. Topics include the reliance of the Taliban on earning taxes from opium poppy famers and heroin labs, and its unwillingness to curb opium production.
