Scrap coal, Ontario urged

A new report by the City of Toronto's medical officer of health includes the recommendation to order an environmental assessment of Ontario Power Generation's Nanticoke power plant. The Canadian company has been criticized for emissions from its coal-fired power plants and its $250 million pollution control plan.

Airlines routinely carry risky cargo

A new report by the U.S. Department of Transportation reveals that hazardous materials are routinely transported via airlines between Canada and the United States. The report, which documented 150 dangerous incidents involving the transport of hazardous materials, covered the period between 1990 and 1998.

Ontario hazardous waste site reopens

Article Abstract:

A hazardous wastes site operated by Safety-Kleen Ltd. has been allowed to reopen after ii was closed down by Canada's Ministry of the Environment. The Ontario-based landfill, which was given a positive report by a group of experts hired by Safety-Kleen, had been leaking methane gas.
