Shift in Congress

Article Abstract:

Many members in Congress have agreed to federally funded embryonic stem cell (ESC) research in response to appeals from groups such as Christopher Reeve Foundation, which advocates for research on spinal injury and juvenile diabetes, and Parkinson's disease groups. The GOP House leaders are facing tough election in November 2006 as the president has signed the bill outlawing fetal farming and vetoed the funding-expansion measure.

Background: Universal preschool

Article Abstract:

President George W. Bush signed into law the federal No Child Left Behind Act in 2002, which hold states accountable for improving academic achievement of all children in the third grade and higher. The law gave states an added reason to focus on preschool where if test scores did not raise for all students including those who attend Head Start then states would lose some federal funding.

Limited cell lines

Article Abstract:

The US President George W. Bush had announced that NIH could start funding embryonic stem cell (ESC) research, but only on stem cell lines that had been harvested and established before August 9, 2001. Scientists are reluctant to pursue the research on cell cultures, as the presidentially approved cell lines have no descriptive information published in peer-reviewed journals.
