Small Town on West Bank Stands As an Epitaph to Dashed Dreams

Article Abstract:

The West Bank town of Abu Dis has received new media attention because it is the home of newly appointed Palestine National Authority (PNA) Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei, successor to Mahmoud Abbas. The small hamlet, which is part of Jerrusalem's municipal boundary, once represented a possible capitol for a Palestinian state when the late PM Yitzhak Rabin and PNA leader Yasir Arafat negotiated the Oslo agreement ten years ago. Palestinian Arabs refer to it as Al Quds, and on Oct. 31, 1995, Abbas and Yossi Beilin, a former Israeli cabinet minister and liason to the peace talks, worked out an agreement for the political and geographic structure of the new Palestinian nation. All of their hope is now a faded political memory reinforced by Israel's security wall that separates the town from Jerusalem.
