Loblaw looks to expand President's Choice brand

Toronto, Ont.-based Loblaw Companies Ltd., which is the largest grocery store chain in Canada, has announced plans to expand its financial services operations. Loblaw, which is led by chairman Galen Weston, wants to expand into travel services, insurance and mutual funds.

Software system disrupts Sobeys; forces grocer to take special charge

Article Abstract:

Canada's number two grocery stores company Sobeys Inc., would take a special $50 million after-tax finance charge to defray expenses on the database management software system the company bought from German software company SAP AG. The software system has been ineffective and disrupted Sobeys' operations. Sobeys plans to switch to another system.

Loblaw gets Provigo deal go-ahead

Article Abstract:

Loblaw Companies Ltd, the biggest grocery chain in Canada, has been granted permission by the Competition Bureau to proceed with its acquisition of Provigo Inc. Loblaw already divested 41 Provigo-owned Loeb locations as required by the federal Competition Bureau. An additional 122 stores, mostly located in Quebec and Ontario, will be sold by Loblaw to ease the bureau's concern about a lessesing of competition as a result of the Loblaw-Provigo deal.
