Freedom lover and human rights advocate Galina Starovoitova died of a gunshot wound outside her apartment in St Petersburg, Russia, on Nov 20, 1998. Starovoitova's apparent political assassination was the sixth murder case involving a member of the Russian Duma since that body was formed in 1993. A vocal critic of nationalists and communists who dominate the Duma, she first gained national prominence in 1989 when she took on the cause of the Armenians on Karabakh.

A home in Haverstraw, NY, was the subject of Edward Hopper's famous painting 'House by the Railroad.' Hopper used creative license to give the home its eerie sense of solitude, which later proved to be popular among filmmakers. The house has been recreated in many films such as 'Psycho' and 'Giant.'
