StarLink fiasco wreaks havoc in the heartland

Article Abstract:

The controversy over the StarLink corn in the grain elevator in Arcadia, IA, has raised concerns among local growers of the bio-engineered corn, which is not approved for human consumption. Farmers, particulary in Iowa counties where large volumes of StarLink corn will be harvested in fall 2000, are worried that the issue could affect grain prices, spark lawsuits and greatly disrupt the nation's grain distribution system. To avoid these problems, Aventis CropScience, which developed the corn, has asked for a temporary federal approval to use the corn in food.

Chiquita: controversial CEO

Article Abstract:

Fruit marketer Chiquita Brands Inc of Cincinnati, OH, has been criticized as the main factor behind the costly trade war between the US and the European Union over bananas. Chiquita CEO Carl H Lindner has been reported to have financed both Republican and Democratic campaigns to gain support from the Congress and the Clinton administration to fight the EU's banana import system. Chiquita, once the top banana supplier to Europe, had lost more than 40% of its market in the region since the EU carved out quotas for European distributors in 1993.
