Staying online without cutting off the rest of the world

Article Abstract:

The International Telecommunication Union has ratified the V.92 standard for modems. Although these new modems, which are now available, offer shorter log-on time, an increase in data-transmission upload speeds and allow a user to answer a phone call while putting an Internet session on hold, Internet service providers will not be able to offer the new standard services until the Fall of 2001 at the earliest.

Black ice, wise bridge: repelling the foe before it forms

Article Abstract:

Black ice is has caused numerous accident in the United States over the years, but a fairly recent invention has enabled people to drive more safely in hazardous conditions. In 1999, the state of Minnesota had 'de-icers' installed on all bridges across the state. The device pumps magnesium chloride onto the roadway and prevents black ice from forming.

Surfing the Internet from your cellphone would seem pointless unless the Web site you visit happens to have the technology to adapt its site's pages to the size of a cell phone's screen. The World Wide Web Consortium has recommended a graphic technology, called Scalable Vector Graphics, that will enable many Web images to fit any screen.
