Stepping out

Article Abstract:

Rockhampton, Queensland, will participate in a two-year, $800,000 study to determine if walking 10,000 steps each day (equivalent to about 1 hour and forty minutes of walking, or 8 km) can provide health benefits. Subjects will wear pedometers to measure their walking activity, which can be as little as 500 steps/day in some sedentary persons. Maria Fiatarone Singh of the University of Sydney claims that ageing is an exercise deficiency syndrome, and Wendy Brown of the University of Queensland says that physical inactivity is responsible for about the same burden of illness as smoking.
