TV world faces shake-out as third network okayed

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission approved CanWest Global's request to purchase eight television stations from WIC Western International Communications Ltd. for $800 million. The acquisition will make CanWest the third largest television network in the country.

Winnipeg-based CanWest Global Communications Corp. is waiting for regulatory approval for its porposed acquisition of WIC Western International Communications Ltd. CanWest, which is led by chief executive officer Leonard Asper, is facing opposition for the merger from rival telecom firms.
