Telecommuting's big experiment. Federal employees are urged to work outside the office

Article Abstract:

Telecommuters counted themselves among 23.6 million in the 1990's so the federal government is hoping to improve the weak numbers of public employees allowed to work at home. Representative Frank R. Wolf is promoting the idea in a traffic-congested Washington region with hopefully 50% of the 1.8 million eligible workers telecommuting by 2004. The government has already employed telework centers in Washington suburbs. The challenge is that many employees work with either classified or highly sensitive materials. There is also the cost of providing home computers to workers. Some managers are nervous about not having total control of their workers, however recruiting federal employees will be easier with the promise of staying out of daily gridlock.

Article Abstract:

A report on Freddie Mac's internal accounting procedures that were amended to enhance earnings may lead to stricter standards for the home mortgage provider. The report by the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight does not provide new information but it shows that the Oversight agency failed to monitor Freddie Mac's misleading accounting of mortgage transactions, swaps and reserves that covered losses in home loans, and disclosure violations.
