The Australian government decided it would outsource all its information technology (IT) functions in large amounts. The Coalition government often seeks alternate providers of non-core functions at competitive prices. It has finalized 3 multi-million dollar deals with IT providers, and is negotiating 2 more. Some companies that previously relied on government contracts are experiencing decreases in revenues.

The net bet thing

This article examines plans to introduce online gambling into Australia. Relevant points include proposals by the South Australian government to allow proprietary racing online, plans by TeleTrak, an online operation, to establish an internet-only betting operation if the legislation is enacted, and the expectation that Australians will take to this new form of gambling enthusiastically.

Article Abstract:

This article examines the likelihood that the so-called year 2000 computer problem (Y2K) will affect the functioning of household appliances in Australia after December 31, 1999, and finds little chance that most will be at all affected. Relevant points include how to test your video cassette recorder to find out if it is Y2K compliant.
