Tension mounts on the docks

Article Abstract:

The battle between the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and the National Farmers' Federation (NFF) is heating up as the $16 mil shipment of 800 Toyota vehicles is stalled at Webb Dock, Melbourne. The NFF has the backing of business and the government if the MUA breaches the New Workplace Relations Act. The matter will go to court and may open the way for companies to employ non-union workers.

Ladies' choice

Article Abstract:

The political party that attracts the largest number of women voters may win Australia's 1998 federal election. Polls suggest that more women opposed a goods and services tax than men, and that women are more influenced by communal good than personal prosperity. Voters favor an increase of women in parliament, and women prefer Kim Beazley's Labor Party to Liberals and the Coalition.

Carr's demolition derby

Article Abstract:

Premier Bob Carr's government remains in power only because the opposition has failed to launch an effective attack and because Labor has no viable substitute. A poll suggests that if Carr were to be removed, 15% of the electorate would be more to likely vote for Labor.
