Terror on the Tigris

Article Abstract:

The Tigris River bridge disaster that killed nearly 1,000 civilians in Baghdad in early-September 2005 is another catalyst for the creation of an oil-rich Shiite enclave within Iraq. The country's predominantly Sunni insurgents continue to stir up ancient sectarian grudges in the name of driving out the Americans, and prominent Shiites, abandoning their past insistence on a united Iraq, are demanding the creation of an autonomous state that foreign commentators are calling 'Shiastan'.

The National Intelligence Council produced a study on this issue, which stated that a coherent system should be adopted, that would help the U.S. forces to react faster and effectively to various challenges.
