Romano Prodi, an economics professor and leader of the Olive Tree coalition, defeated Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi on Apr 21, 1996, bringing the Communist party to power for the first time in 50 yeas. However, Prodi adheres to reformist policies and vows to continue deficit reduction.

Montreal's Anglophone community, which includes more than half a million people, feels threatened by the Francophone-led movement to separate Quebec from Canada. Some federalist Anglophones want to partition Montreal, if Quebec secedes. Several Anglophones describe conditions in Montreal.

Voters in Italy, France and Germany expressed their dissatisfaction with elected officials they view as corrupt and out-of-touch by electing representatives from the far right or the far left. Declining social and economic conditions contribute to feelings of voters.
