The Mutual Fund Scandal's Next Chapter

Article Abstract:

Securities industry regulators are now monitoring two important developments in the mutual industry so that another market timing scandal will be avoided. Mutual fund managers need to price their portfolios accurately on a daily basis and to avoid excessive fees. Regulators are especially concerned about corporate and municipal bond funds whose prices remain stagnant even when Treasury securities waiver. These prices help to motivate market timing for brokers who take advantage of prices that are askew and misleading to investors.

Why the Secrecy About Financial Covenants?

Article Abstract:

The trend towards increased corporate cooperation in providing disclosure statements to investors has not reached the level of revealing financial covenants made between companies and their lending banks. Financial covenants include statistical details and agreements the corporations have made to secure loans. Because businesses do not reveal them, investors are challenged when trying to uncover the reasons loans are recalled due to corporate violations of the covenants.
