The stock market is likely to become even more unstable in 1998 than it was in 1997 due to the economic crisis in Asia. The best and worst-performing mutual funds are ranked according to a system that considers past performance, consistency and volatility over a three-year period.

The best and worst mutual funds in six major fund categories are ranked based on returns over 3 and 5 years. The categories represented include Canadian equity funds, Canadian small cap funds and Canadian bond funds. Canadian balanced and global equity funds are also ranked.

Sometimes, less is more

Research indicates that the returns of no-load funds are equal or better than the returns of load funds. However, because they tend to keep their money invested in a fund longer, load fund investors tend to make more money than their no-load counterparts.
