The evolution of common-law marriage
Article Abstract:
Common-law marriage has been a popular practice in the US ever since colonial times. This particular union involves the granting of legal rights to cohabitation partners who have not undergone either a religious or civil ceremony. Although there has been some opposition to this practice, US courts continue to uphold the right of couples to partake in this union since it is believed that civil and religious ceremonies should not be imposed on couples.
