The flying Frenchman - passion play: wherever 'Les Miserables' goes in the world, its creator Claude-Michel Schonberg goes too

Article Abstract:

Claude-Michel Schonberg, composer of 'Les Miserables,' insists on traveling to each new production and helping to rehearse it, hoping to re-create the spirit which animated its London premiere in 1985. He comments on the writing processes he used in creating his three major works, 'Les Miserables,' 'Miss Saigon,' and 'Martin Guerre,' each with lyricist Alain Boubil.

Be-bop a Zulu

Johnny Clegg, as a white man, broke apartheid laws as he chose to play music with South African musicians. Clegg had been collaborating with Zulu musicians for over two decades while with his bands Juluku and Savuka, he began recording 'world music' albums long before the category existed.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra has managed to attract the renowned conductor Charles Dutoit who rarely guests to conduct two programs in 2001. The music world also hopes Dutoit may persuade his former wife and famous pianist Martha Argerich to come to the country.
