Critics state that Food and Drug Administration regulators rush to review applications for new medicines but are slow to address safety problems that come to light after drug has entered the market. In order to restore public confidence in the nations prescription-drug supply, Michael Leavitt, the Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary, plans to create the Drug Safety Oversight Board which will disseminate, via the internet and fliers, information about risks discovered about a drug after it is released to the market.

Consumer advocates are raising their concerns over potentially dangerous dietary supplements. The consumer unions are not happy with only advices and warnings, they want the government to intervene and try to stop the usage of certain ingredients in the dietary supplements that are harmful to the health.

Makers of dietary supplements claim that they help in promoting health. Manufacturers are increasingly using many ingredients that are found in dietary supplements in the daily functional foods and claim that they are trying to promote health or prevent disease.
