The last frontier

Article Abstract:

Man has been making commercial use of marine resources ever since history has been recorded. Small-time fishermen have, however, suffered since fishing industrialists have encroached on their areas. Moreover, large-scale operations are far more economical. Though environmentalists are focusing on protection and recovery of marine mammals which are under threat of extinction, effective laws need to be passed to regulate the fishing industry.

Marine mammals

Article Abstract:

Environmental laws were passed in the 1970s for the conservation of marine mammals. The Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) imposed a ban on taking marine mammals from US waters, and importing marine mammals and their products into the US. Coastal Alaska was exempted from this legislation. The Endangered Species Act aimed to protect the ecosystems in which marine mammals exist.

Anger on the waterfront: Atlantic Canadians fight for a way of life
