Negotiators from Mexico, Canada and the US met in Washington D.C. in an attempt to resolve differences over specifics of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The US wants to attach environmental and labor amendments to the agreement. Support for NAFTA is weak in the US.

Canadians fear a tax slap

Many Canadian corporations are fearful that US President-elect Bill Clinton will make good on his campaign promise of collecting more taxes on foreign corporations operating in the US. Clinton says he can collect an additional $55 billion.
