The new corporate philanthropy

Article Abstract:

US business may be cutting back on charity. Corporate America is proud of its support of worthy causes and donated $8.5 bil in cash and products in 1996 with drug companies the top corporate givers for 1996. The percentage of corporate earnings dedicated to philanthropic purposes has steadily been cut over the last 10 years, even though corporate profits tripled. Government cutbacks in social services do not help, but there is hope. Experts think the US is about to enter a new golden age of philanthropy with most aid coming from individuals and foundations, not corporations.

Y2K Dilemma

Article Abstract:

There is much concern regarding the year 2000 computer glitch. Many question whether computers will be able to read the year 2000. Although many experts dismiss such a scenario, others contend that some disruption is inevitable because of increased economic globilization and computer connectivity. Despite these speculations, Y2K does have the potential of triggering a worldwide recession that could threaten retirement funds, stock market investments, and electronically stored records.

Truck Safety

Article Abstract:

A growing US economy and trucking deregulation have resulted in more trucks on highways. Not only there are more trucks, but they are longer and heavier. Although experts believe these trucks pose a danger because of their size, industry officials contend larger trucks are safer and important for this growing economy. Despite their disagreements, truck accidents have increased.
