The next battle

Article Abstract:

The collapse of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan will not bring relief to millions of peasants in remote villages scarred by drought and war. Emergency food aid faces weather problems, pockets of Taliban resistance, infighting between various anti-Taliban factions, refusal of truck drivers to enter some areas, mine fileds, low water levels in rivers that carry barges, and the refusal of the Uzbeck government to repair a bridge to Afghanistan (since they fear infiltration from Afghanistan if the bridge is reopened).

One crisis too many?

Article Abstract:

Washington wants to actively participate in relief aid for Kashmir's earthquake victims, but aid fatigue has slowed down the high intensity campaign to win hearts and minds in the Muslim worlds. The U.S. war machine in Afghanistan was the Western military force closest to the epicenter of the quake yet it was the Iranians and the Turks who were first to respond in a significant way within the initial 24 hours.
