Israel tightly restricts Palestinians' freedom to travel in order to curb suicide bombers. Israel has stated that it would remove troops from the occupied territories when Palestinians can take responsibility for security, but the controls are likely to stay there for a while from a security perspective, as they are effective.

The Palestinian's new president Mahmoud Abbas requires some time to confront the militants. His most difficult relationship with the militants would be with Islamic militants outside Fatah party, particularly the politically popular Hamas, which has asked Fatah for a power-sharing arrangement after Yasser Arafat's death.

The 455-mile security barrier that is being built by Israel expresses the division and distrust between the Israelis and Palestinians. Some Palestinians and Israelis who are opposing the wall are contending that rather than being constructed purely for security reasons, Israelis are using it to grab Palestinian land.
