The school choice debate

Article Abstract:

Economist Milton Friedman proposed providing government-funded vouchers for parents to choose between private and public schools. Critics, however, maintain that taxes would have to be raised to provide money for parents wanting to send their children to private schools. Moreover, private schools would raise their fees beyond the voucher limit to avoid admission to unwanted students. Privatizing education would also result in political uninvolvement. The Clinton administration is expected to promote public school choice and anti-discrimination measures.

Recovered-memory debate: can painful memories be repressed and later recalled?

Article Abstract:

Repressed memories of sexual abuse that occurred in childhood and surfaced in adulthood have become a widely debated topic and the subject of numerous lawsuits. Some mental health professionals believe that the buried memories can surface during psychotherapy, while other experts say that some psychotherapists are coaching patients into believing they were sexually abused. Litigation does not appear to be a healing solution to the problem of child sexual abuse.
