Over 1.4 mil chickens were slaughtered in Hong Kong during one week of Jan 1998, in an attempt to control an outbreak of avian influenza. Four people were killed by this flu in Dec 1997, and 12 more have contracted the disease. Quarantines and widespread destruction of chickens have failed to calm people in Hong Kong, and the absence of chicken from the Chinese diet is causing widespread difficulty.

An estimated 40,000 people gathered at Hong Kong's Victoria Park on June 4, 1998, to protest the Tiananmen Square massacre, the shrinking economy, and unemployment. Furthermore, voters turned out in record numbers to reinstate democratic candidates who had been replaced with Beijing backers. Some pro-Beijing candidates who campaigned for better housing and more jobs won their elections as well.
