Canada's debt-plagued economy was portrayed as similar to Mexico's in a Jan 1995 Wall Street Journal editorial, which has prompted some to suggest that Canada's is essentially a third world economy. A tongue-in-cheek analysis suggests that Canada's consumers must get poorer for the analogy to hold.

Increased use of computer and communications technologies form the base of new economic trends. Statistics Canada claimed that the recession is over in Jan 1993, but the new trends have not reduced unemployment. Changes in corporate philosophy that reflect the trends are examined.
