The May 1996 election of a socialist government in British Columbia illustrates how Canada's government often does not represent the majority's views. The conservative vote was split because conservatives placed themselves and their parties ahead of conservative values instead of forming a coalition.

Canada is traditionally thought of as a welfare state, but since 1988, anti-government conservatism has become an increasingly popular ideology. Many Canadians are disenchanted with big-government solutions and high tax rates. A symposium on conservatism will be held on May 24, 1996.

A time to reduce the official head count

Article Abstract:

Ontario Premier Mike Harris's proposal to merge Toronto's regional government and six municipalities into one mega-government should save taxpayers around $500 million by 2000. This type of plan could be used in other cities and in the federal government to cut down on bureaucracy.
