Tire hearings today focus on memo

Article Abstract:

A Congressional hearing on Sep 6, 2000, will focus on an internal Ford Motor Co memorandum from Mar 1999 that suggests Bridgestone/Firestone did not want to notify US regulators about problems with Ford Explorer tires in Saudi Arabia. The hearings will also consider the issue of just who knew of problems with Firestone tires, and when they first knew of these problems. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told legislators that it received only 46 complaints about Firestone ATX, ATX II and Wilderness tires from 1990-1999, but began an investigation promptly when the number of complaints jumped sharply to 222 from Jan 2000 through Jun 2000.

Depositions in tire lawsuits don't match company's lines

Article Abstract:

The assertions of two Bridgestone/Firestone executives in depositions for lawsuits against the company do not agree precisely with what the company and top executives are claiming since the tire recall on Aug 9, 2000. David Laubie, executive director of sales engineering said he prepared reports that included data on peeling treads. Another deposition claimed that the tire pressure of 30 psi was recommended by Bridgestone/Firestone evolved only at the time that the voluntary recall was announced.
