As big PC brother watches, users encounter frustration

Article Abstract:

Many privacy consultants are alarmed by the blase attitude of consumers toward the Internet. In spite of attempts by security software companies and Internet Service Providers, consumers seem to refuse "cookies," files monitoring the users' site-visits, almost never, albeit often a cookie rejection results in disfunction of the Web site. And the last Pew Internet and American Life Project report noted that 56% of consumers didn't know what cookies were. More consumers, however are becoming pragmatic about privacy and use of their credit cards online and pick and choose among trusted sites. Companies are also obliging by finding alternatives to the collection of personal information.

In Survey, Fewer Are Sharing Files (Or Admitting It)

Article Abstract:

The Pew Internet and American Life Project will issue a report that indicates there has been a 50% decrease in the number of people swapping online music files since mid-2003. This trend reflects the success of the Recording Industry Association of America's lawsuits against individual music file users. Previous surveys of file swappers revealed that many Internet customers did not understand fully the consequences of copyright infringement.
