Titans at the altar: two financial giants link up with new partners

The Bank of Nova Scotia announced on Jun 24, 1997, that it plans to acquire National Trustco Inc for $1.25 billion. Three days later the Royal Bank of Canada submitted a $2.4 billion buyout plan for London Insurance Group Inc. Canada's banking and finance industries have undergone several recent acquisitions.

Liberal members of parliament in Canada are fiercely opposed to the $39 billion merger between Royal Bank and Bank of Montreal. Finance Minister Paul Martin was alienated by the banks' failure to provide warning prior to the announcement.
