Tobacco companies warn of bankruptcy

Article Abstract:

A lawyer for Philip Morris said the $154 billion in punitive damages being sought from the US' five biggest cigarette manufacturers would force these companies into bankruptcy. The attorney, Dan Webb, in closing arguments in a class-action case involving 700,000 sick Florida smokers, said the punitive damages are like death warrants for the five companies. Webb is insisting that no damages should be awarded, but added that $75 million would be a fair amount, based on ready cash and percentage of customers living in Florida.

Boston opens $390M tunnel to send sewage into Atlantic

Article Abstract:

The city government of Boston, MA, will officially open the world's longest offshore sewage tunnel on Sep 6, 2000. The $390-million tunnel, which has been under construction since roughly 1991, will transport treated wastewater through 24-ft-diameter pipes beyond Boston Harbor, MA, and dump it 10 miles out, deep into the Atlantic Ocean. Critics of the project say project funds would have been better spent identifying better, more effective ways to treat wastewater.
