Toyota racks up record $120.9B revenue for year

Toyota Motor Corp on May 16, 2001 reported that in FY 2001 ended Mar 31 it earned $4.2 billion on a worldwide revenue of $120.9 billion. Revenue increased 4.2% from 2000, while earnings rose 15.9% The automaker's North American operation accounted for almost $44.7 billion of total revenue, an increase of 6.3% from 2000. While the company would not disclose North American income, it posted an operating income of almost $1.9 billion in 2001, up 25.5% from the previous year. Toyota attributed the record yearly revenue and earnings to an increase in local production, new products in Japan and worldwide cost-cutting.

GM racks up record $1.18B loss from strikes

Article Abstract:

GM announced on Jun. 30, 1998, that the company's profit in the second quarter will be reduced by $1.18 billion due to strikes in Flint, MI. The figure was higher than $900 million in losses that the company suffered during a 17-day strike in 1996. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, GM stated a loss of $1.79 per share after taxes because the Flint strikes resulted in production loss of 227,000 trucks and cars. Aside from 9,200 striking workers, the Flint strike has idled almost 163,000 employees.

Ford CEO takes recall reins as more questions arise

Article Abstract:

Ford Motor CEO Jacques Nasser, on Aug 16, 2000, said that there is 'absolutely no data or incidents of trends of incidents' showing a design problem in the company's Explorer sport-utility vehicles. Nasser's declaration followed after Bridgestone/Firestone Inc recalled about 6.5 million ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT tires on Aug 9. The tires in question were used in most of Ford's trucks, particularly Explorers.
