Transportation policy: should non-highway programs get more funding?

Article Abstract:

The 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA), which authorized funding for highways, transit systems, bridges, and bicycle paths is the focus of controversy among lawmakers. The complex, $157 billion measure expires September 1997 and Congress, environmentalists, automakers, and bicyclists are all involved in the debate over allocation of funds in the replacement legislation. Replacement bills such as the Clinton Administration's National Economic Crossroads Transportation Efficiency Act (NEXTEA) and the bi-partisan ISTEA-Works reflect the numerous and sometimes opposing goals of policymakers and interested parties.

Food safety: are consumers adequately protected from tainted food?

Article Abstract:

The outbreak of food poisoning from Jack in the Box hamburgers in Jan 1993, has led to reconsiderations of the government's role in food inspection. Tainted seafood, poultry and beef and the use of pesticides are the main concerns of public interest groups such as the Safe Food Coalition. Agricultural Sec Mike Espy has taken a reformist stance on meat and poultry inspection regulations, reflecting many experts' belief that the current system is out-dated. The food industry agrees that changes need to be made but does not welcome any more government interference.
