Years of frustrations may ground US Airways

US Airways flight attendants who have patiently waited three and a half years for a new labor contract and a pay increase are ready to walk off their jobs if the airline cannot reach an agreement with their union, the Assn of Flight Attendants. The union has threatened to strike randomly selected US Airways flights after 12:01 am ET on Mar 25, 2000, if no deal is reached. Airline officials have warned that the company will shut down if no contract is reached. The dispute is the latest in a series of labor- management battles at six airlines since 1997 that have angered thousands of passengers across the US. The dispute stems from an obscure US law that allows airline labor negotiations to run on for years.

Travelocity, travel agents fight airlines' new Web site

Article Abstract:

Leading Internet travel site Travelocity and the American Society of Travel Agents have independently urged the Justice Dept to open an investigation into an ambitious air-travel Internet World Wide Web site being developed by five major airlines. More than 30 airlines, including the five major carriers as equity partners, have agreed to participate in the as yet, unnamed site designated as T2. Travel agents fear that agreements forged by the airlines involved in T2 will lead to price fixing.

Airline antitrust trial delayed

The Dept of Justice's (DOJ) antitrust lawsuit against Northwest Airlines Inc and Continental Airlines Inc was postponed on Oct 25, 2000 to allow Northwest to offer a settlement. A settlement would end the lawsuit that DOJ filed in 1998 after Northwest purchased a controlling stake in Continental as part of a marketing partnership. The DOJ argues that Northwest's stock acquisition was really a merger that could result in higher prices and worse service for passengers.
