The increasing number of trucks on American highways is driving the need for improved traffic safety measures. Fatal accidents involving big rigs have been rising since 1992, halting a downward trend. Research shows that car drivers, not truckers, are at fault in nearly three-quarters of truck-related accidents, but are also less likely to survive.
