U S WEST stock suffers as Qwest deal hovers in limbo

Article Abstract:

The stock price of U S WEST Inc fell on news that Qwest Communications was considering a merger with Deutsche Telekom. Qwest had been U S WEST's prospective merger partner. Industry sources, however, said Qwest can be sued under a merger agreement that prevents both Qwest and U S WEST from pursuing other transactions. Leaving out U S WEST in any merger agreement would also damage Qwest's reputation.

CEO's curt takeover refusal questioned

Article Abstract:

U S West CEO Sol Trujillo's publicly announced rejection of Deutsche Telekom's (DT) takeover bid after only two days of negotiations is being questioned by shareholders, analysts and Qwest CEO Joe Nacchio. Sources close to the negotiations reported that DT's separate offers for both U S West and Qwest, whose merger has been conditionally approved by the Federal Trade Commision, totaled more than $110 billion. Sources close to the deal say that Trujillo argued that a deal with the Germans would further delay regulatory approval for U S West's agreed merger with Qwest. Nacchio had hoped to forge a three-way deal to create a global giant.
